On Monday, actor Madhuri Dixit and Alia Bhatt paid tributes to the late Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj.

Kathak Master Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away on Monday. Actor Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt and many other Bollywood actors have been paying homage to him on social media.

Madhuri, a student of Pandit Birju Maharaj, shared a throwback photo with him and wrote: “He was a hero but a child like innocence. He is my guru but also my friend. He taught me the intricacies of dance and abhinaya, but never failed to laugh at his fun events. He has left mourning fans and students, but he has also left a tradition that we all carry on. Thank you Maharajji for all you have taught me dance with humility, elegance and kindness. He concluded his post by adding, “Millions of lives (millions of salutations).”

Actress Alia Bhatt shared her photo on her Instagram stories and recalled the time she met him again in 2018. He wrote, “I had the honor and privilege of spending three full days with Pandit Birju Maharaj in 2018 while preparing for the film Gar More. Pardesia. I will never forget everything he taught me. This may be one of the most creative and fulfilling experiences I have ever had. A legend that inspired many, will always pursue it through his art. Writing this post today really breaks my heart. May his soul rest in peace. ”

Birju Maharaj, who was suffering from kidney failure, had been undergoing dialysis treatment for the past one month due to diabetes. His granddaughter Ragini Maharaj said in a statement that he died of a heart attack.

“He was with us when this happened. He ate dinner, we played anthology, because he loved old music. He was lying … Suddenly his breathing was steady. “It will be a minute. We rushed to the hospital but unfortunately we could not save him. He died on the way to the hospital,” Ragini said.

He was one of the most famous artists in India who provided the voice for a song for Satrang Keladi called Satrang Keladi from Kalka-Pintadin Gharana in Lucknow. He has five children, three daughters and two sons and five grandchildren.
